Musings & Rants

“Are you crazy, OP? I don’t wanna love Nex! I hate him! He’s ________!” Insert your own reasons: “He’s rude! He’s like Riven! He’s boring!” Etc., etc.

Here’s another way to look at it. You do wanna love Nex, but those reasons are the barriers to your love. If they weren’t there, why couldn’t you love him?

This quote explains it well: “Hatred is a disguised form of love. You can only hate someone whom you really wish to love, because if you were totally indifferent to that person, you could not even get up enough energy to hate him.”

Both love and hate are forms of caring about someone — i.e., being invested in them. They both take a lot of time and energy. If you didn’t care about that person, you wouldn’t waste your time on them. You only spend it on people who matter to you in some way.

Why does Nex matter to the fandom? Because he’s dating Aisha. If you love her, you wanna share her happiness. You wanna cheer for her and look forward to her future as much as she does.

It’s hard to do that if you hate the person she might spend her future with. That’s why you wish you could love him. If only he wasn’t…insert that list of reasons again.

If we were talking about a real person, chances are you’d never get your wish. People can change, of course, but you can tell when it’s unlikely they will. But a fictional character can always change. It all depends on how his story unfolds. Those annoying traits that keep you from loving him could be gone by the end of next season.

There’s a lot we don’t know about Nex yet. Where is he from? What’s his family life like? What’s his social status? Why did he become a Paladin instead of a Specialist? Heck, what is a Paladin?

I bet Rainbow won’t answer all of these questions, but even a couple answers could change how we interpret his character. Nex is a work-in-progress. That’s what character development is all about.

With that in mind, let’s look at a few reasons the fandom hates him — and how Rainbow can make those reasons disappear. Read the rest of this post

Musings & Rants

In case you skipped Roy’s post, here’s a recap. Roy was just a minor character. He was her segue between mourning Nabu and falling in love with Nex. That’s why he vanished at the end of season six: Nickbow (and Aisha) didn’t need him anymore.

Aisha’s dating Nex now, and the fans aren’t happy. They pretend the two aren’t a real couple, or they act like Nex doesn’t exist by leaving him out of fan art or screenshot sets. Ms. “I’m-Banning-Guys-All-Together” can’t really be in love with a “bad boy,” right? And there’s no way he loves her back. He just loves competing with her.

Here’s my two cents. Yes, this is my opinion, but I’ve got some official stuff to back it up. Read the rest of this post

Musings & Rants

Roy X Aisha. Sorry, “Royisha” fans. It wasn’t meant to be. The Fairy of Waves is officially with Nex, and it looks like Blond Specialist #2 is gone for good.

In case you’re hoping it’s a mistake, here’s more bad news: Aisha and Nex already have a couple comic. It’s called “La Prova di Nex” (Nex’s Test), and it came out in the Feb. 2015 issue of Winx Magazine. (Hmmmm…Valentine’s Day’s in February. 😛 ) Nex goes to Andros and meets her parents. Here’s a quote from Queen Niobe (my translation): “It’s a special occasion! We’re pleased to meet your new boyfriend!”

I know what you’re thinking: “The comics aren’t canon.” You’re right. They’re not. This hasn’t happened — yet. 😛 But Aisha and Nex are together in season seven (sans Roy), so the comic’s just confirming what we know from the show.

What happened? Why did Aisha choose the “bad boy” over the “nice guy?” Wasn’t Roy already her boyfriend? And why did he vanish from the show? He could have at least said goodbye!

I think I’ve got some answers. Some of them are just opinions, but some are based on official information. All of them point to the same conclusion: Roy was a minor character all along. Read the rest of this post

Winx fans, I wanna hear from you!

I’m working on a couple posts about the Roy/Aisha/Nex love triangle, but I’ve realized I don’t have enough of an idea of why the fans prefer one guy over the other. I want your opinions!

Here’s what I wanna know:

  • Which guy do you prefer?
  • Why do you think he’s a good match for Aisha?
  • Why do you think the other guy’s not a good match for Aisha?

You can write a few words or a few paragraphs. It doesn’t matter. I just wanna know what you think.

Episode Reviews

I’m not good at “reviews,” so instead I’ll just share the thoughts I jotted down as I was watching “Return to Alfea.”

  • I’m sooo sick of the Winx showing off and the Alfea students treating them like superstars. When Stella turned some of the girls into her clones, I kept saying to myself, “Ew! Ew!” Before the Winx became guardian fairies, they were just students, too. Any fairy could potentially become as strong as they are.
  • As expected, not much love for Roxy. It’s so painful to watch the Winx discard her. At least she talked to someone other than Bloom for once. Then she just disappeared. She’ll probably become another eternal Alfea student, like Mirta. Just there to fill the background. Roxy, to your fans, you will always be a Winx. 😥
  • Origami is from Japan. How would Helia know about it? 😕
  • Finally some drama for Flora and Helia! This was one of the five things I wanted to see in season five: a couple other than Musa and Riven having issues. I hope Princess Crystal — weird name for someone from a nature realm —  delivers some love-triangle madness to rival Diaspro-Sky-Bloom!

The only thing I didn’t approve of: Helia calling Flora his “friend.” No, darling. She’s your girlfriend, and you were proud to say so until a few moments ago. So much for being the guy who gives love advice.

(Side note: I guess now we know Flora was lying in Magical Adventure when she said she was the princess of Linphea. Not such a goody-goody after all. :P)

  • So the Sirenix curse changed Daphne into a spirit? Interesting. I wonder if there’s a way to undo it… (By the way, am I the only one who thought Bloom would take longer to find her? They made it seem like they hadn’t seen each other in ages, yet they met again so quickly.)
  • Why did the Winx act surprised when they entered the Magic Archives? They’ve been there before! That’s where Dark Bloom attacked the others and stole a piece of the Codex. Oh, wait —  I guess that was retconned out of the Nick version. So confusing…
  • Musa sure had an attitude in this episode. 😛

Aisha: “We could try looking under ‘S’ for ‘Sirenix.'”
    Musa: “Or ‘F’…for ‘fat chance.'”

    Really, Musa?

  • Sky, if Icy noticed your haircut, it’s bad. Get your honor back.
  • Helia’s flirting with Crystal already? That was fast. At least Brandon resisted it. And to think we named you “Best Boyfriend!”
  • Sky’s got amnesia? Why is this not upsetting me more? Is it because stuff like this happens to Bloom and Sky all the time?! (Do you any of you watch ABC’s Once Upon a Time? They’re like Snow White and Charming!)

Not a bad episode. Lots of drama and action, just what I like. I’m glad Alfea will be the Winx’s “headquarters” again. I love Alfea. 🙂

And if “The Lilo” was supposed to be the next episode, I see why Rainbow and Nick moved it to the beginning. It’s completely irrelevant to what’s happening right now. Better yet, why not cut it all together?

Next time on Winx Club: Beyond Believix: Tecna becomes an evil robot? We’ve just slipped off into La La Land!
