S4, EP25 - Riven CryingRiven has always been the resident “jerk with a heart,” and today he proved it yet again by doing something we’ve never seen him do: cry. Yes, in episode twenty-five, Musa finds him with tears in his eyes. This isn’t a “big boys don’t cry” argument but a “Riven actually knows how to cry” revelation. He’s been betrayed by witches, he’s been yelled at by Musa and almost lost their relationship, and he’s had his ego stomped on countless times, yet the only thing that turns on the waterworks is losing a friend forever.

It’s a little surprising that he and Nabu were so close. I guess it started, strangely enough, in S3, EP 21-22, when he thought Nabu wanted Musa. One of the best Riven lines ever: “Put my girlfriend down now.” After the confusion was cleared up, the two guys were free to become friends. This season, Nabu was there for Riven more than the other Specialists, even when Riven didn’t want to talk. I bet now he’d give anything to hear Nabu yakking about how to treat a girl.

I have to admit Riven has surprised me a lot this season. There’s more to his personality that I think even Musa knows.

Here’s what I noticed in episode fourteen. A lot of it is about Roxy because she was more of a factor than usual.

  • Roxy seems to want to join the club but feels like she can’t. She catches herself about to say something that she changes to “…di voi Winx” (…of you Winx), as though she’s trying to place herself outside of the circle. There could be two reasons for that: 1) she doesn’t want to offend the girls by making herself a Winx unofficially, and 2) she’s still unsure because she knows joining means accepting her new life as a fairy and the responsibilities come with it.
  • It sounded like Faragonda invites Roxy to Alfea, but Roxy flatly refuses…and stomps away again, as usual.
  • Riven definitely seems sorry for how he treated Musa at the recording studio (episode ten). Nevertheless, he’s still jealous of her relationship with Jason Queen. Musa tries to talk to Riven—probably about her singing—and they have a decent conversation until Jason shows up and makes Riven angry again. Also about Jason, I think Bloom tries earlier in the episode to bring Musa back to Earth (no pun intended) about the whole situation.
  • Sure enough, Roxy can’t use her extra Believix wings. We have a Bloom-esque transformation story here.
  • Musa is very upset after opening Jason’s letter. Another blogger, fabcat, said it’s because the record deal fell through. I don’t know Italian, but that would make sense. (Thank you to winx fan for sending the blog link.)
  • Guess who didn’t die after all? Of course, Bloom couldn’t have finished them off herself!

YouTube user gdaawinxqwerty posted the preview of episode fifteen, which airs Friday. Embedding is disabled, so you’ll have to follow the link to see the video.

Here’s a translation of an episode fourteen summary from a blog called TV Boomerang. (I didn’t translate the title because I’m sure you can tell what it says. :D)

Roxy’s powers are growing stronger each day, but the Fairy of Animals is still not ready to face her destiny. Musa feels she has finally found her path with Jason Queen, the producer who wants to launch her career as a music star. Maybe things aren’t so simple, but Riven has certainly learned a lesson: you don’t play out an important story with jealousy! The six Alfea fairies, together with Roxy, have become the seven protectors of Gardenia. Their popularity is increasing among the people, and the fairies’ Believix energy continues to grow. The Winx discover fame but between an interview and the other, the fairies and Roxy must get down to bringing magic to humans and foiling the plans of a ruthless group of animal traffickers.

It sounds a lot like the preview, except we didn’t hear the part about Musa and Riven before. Maybe they’ll start to mend their relationship in this episode. And what’s with this “fairies and Roxy” business? I guess Roxy still hasn’t decided if she wants to be a fairy, based on the “not ready to face her destiny” line and her outburst towards Bloom in episode thirteen. But doesn’t the title seem…telling? 😀

Can’t wait to see how this plays out!

Professor Griffin calls them “wizards” in S1: E8 (RAI English), but I bet that was a mistake since wizards are magical beings and the Specialists don’t have magic powers. The first time I saw this episode, I thought maybe “wizard” had a different meaning in the Winx Club world, but that can’t be with characters like Saladin and Nabu around.

So if the Specialists don’t have magic, are they humans? They don’t act like they are since “human” seems to equal “earthling,” and none of the Specialists are from Earth.

Not wizards, not humans but human-like, non-magical…what in the world are they?

On the Redfountain page at the official website, it calls Codatorta a “magician.” That’s different enough from a “wizard.” I guess the Specialists are just boys who learn magic tricks instead of full-fledged magic. Then could they be human, after all? If so, what are they doing in Magix, especially if non-magical beings aren’t supposed to be there?

So, I was writing an article on the couples this morning, but then I saw that Winxipedia had beaten me to it. Oh well. I still have my own opinions about the couples. However, there is one thing that Winxipedia mentioned that I am in total agreement with:

Flora and Helia are caught! They can’t hide that they’re the cutest couple EVER!!

They’ve never once argued! The only trouble was getting up the courage to tell each other their feelings. After that, their relationship has been perfect. They are the cutest couple and the most likely to last! ^-^

Then, there’s Layla and Nabu. Remember how much Layla hated Nabu when they first met? Now it seems like that never happened. They’ve been the most lovey-dovey this season. Nabu even proposed! (You go, Nabu! Woo!) In one episode, these two discussed the possibility of living on Earth together (though their parents may not approve of the future rulers of Andros moving to Earth). Either way, Layla and Nabu are the second cutest couple!

Tecna and Timmy have had very little attention since the first two seasons. I suppose that’s a good thing. It means that they haven’t suffered from drama as much as the others. But I think these two need more attention. For now, they’re a boring couple. Kinda cute, but boring.

Most of the drama this season has revolved around Stella and Brandon. When I first heard about Mitzi trying to break them up, I was furious! Not that they’re my favorite couple. It’s just that with the whole monster incident in season three, they couldn’t break up! Brandon loved Stella no matter what she looked like. For someone as vain as she is, that means a lot! I knew they would stay together. I’d say that Stella and Brandon are the most enduring couple.

I’ve already devoted an entire article to Musa and Riven. Need I say more? These two are complicated. (For a second opinion on them, visit Winxipedia.)

Speaking of complicated, the last couple is Bloom and Sky. These two have had quite a ride together. With Diaspro and the whole Brandon-Sky switch, I’d say they rival Musa and Riven for the title of most complicated couple. In fact, they’re so complicated that their relationship is almost annoying. With how much they’ve been through, you’d think they’d be over the drama by now. Someone like Andy showing up shouldn’t even be an issue. (Bloom isn’t going anywhere, Sky. Stop being a drama king. ;p) I’d say that keeping little secrets (like Andy and Diaspro) has been the biggest issue with this couple. They need to tell each other everything so they won’t have anymore nasty surprises.

Anyway, it seems like most issues were solved (with the exception of Musa and Riven) by episode 13, but who knows? There’s another half of season four to look forward to. Anything could happen between now and the end. When this season ends, I will rate the couples again and account for any changes that may occur. But for now, these are my opinions. You don’t have to agree with me, though. Please feel free to tell me your opinions on the couples. =)
