What If Wednesday

Today’s “What If Wednesday” question: “What if we learned more about these three magic species?”

I know. That’s a weird question. 😛 Anyway, we barely know anything about them, even though they were all introduced in season one.

Who are they? Let’s take a look.

Elves

I ran into a fan on Instagram last week who didn’t know Palladium’s an elf. Can you blame them? Besides having pointy ears, he doesn’t stand out much from the other magic beings we’ve met.

Elves are a staple of fantasy series, so why are there so few of them in Winx Club? All we’ve seen are Palladium and these two at Musa’s show in “The Show Must Go On” (2X15):

See them in the pink and teal dresses? They look out of place, don’t they? Maybe they were headed somewhere else, heard music coming from Redfountain, and decided to stay for some entertainment. (Side note: there’s a weird animation error in this screenshot. Can you spot it?)

The only thing Rainbow has told us in the show about elves is they evolve. That’s why Palladium looked like a Keebler elf with a growth spurt in season one but now looks more like a high elf. Will we ever see him change again? Probably not — although he called it one of his “many teacher transformations,” which means it’s happened before.

What did he look like before season one? Maybe I don’t wanna know.

Anyway, one of the season six comics focuses on him. In #125: “The Kingdom of the Dark Elves,” the Winx travel to his realm through the Legendarium World to find his lost lover Athris. I won’t give the story away. Find out what happens for yourself. 🙂

I’d love to see that realm in the show. Where is it? Is it isolated from the rest of the Magic Dimension? Maybe that’s why we don’t see more elves in Magix.

Ogres

Season one, episode one. Bloom’s eating an apple in the Gardenia Park when a panicked Kiko scurries up and gestures for her to follow him. He leads her to a clearing where a sun fairy’s being attacked by a bunch of ghouls and an ogre.

That ogre, Knut, is the only one of his kind we’ve seen to this day. Where’s the rest of them? Did the Specialists wipe them out?

Also, why is he allowed to roam freely? Aren’t ogres are treated like monsters? Yet the optics shop owner in Magix City didn’t have a problem with him trying on glasses!

To be honest, I don’t care where Knut comes from. I also don’t care why he’s not Alfea’s janitor anymore. Or maybe he is, but it doesn’t matter because he’s such a minor character.

But he still makes this list because we don’t much about ogres, and — to be fair — he played a big role in bringing the Winx Club together.

Leprechauns

I understand not knowing Palladium’s an elf. Without the ears, he could pass as a regular guy with long hair. But what else could Wizgiz be besides a leprechaun? You could put him on a box of Lucky Charms, and no one would know the difference!

Just like Knut, Wizgiz is the only one of his kind that we’ve seen. Where is he from? We know he’s got a home somewhere, since he left Alfea to visit his mom in “A Friendship Sundered” (1X08).

Wait a minute. How can he have a mom? Aren’t all leprechauns little bearded men?

Also, how old is he? The season two and three version of the website said he’s been teaching at Alfea for more than 1,000 years! Good grief!

Final Thoughts

If I had to pick one species I’m the most interested in, it would be the elves. I’ve always liked elves. Plus, Palladium’s one of my teachers.

What other magic species do you wanna know more about?

That’s it for today!

Today's "What If Wednesday" question: "What if Musa's father, Ho-Boe, remarries?"

The death of her mother, Matlin, has been a big part of Musa's story since season one. Almost every season has referenced it somehow. (I think the only two that didn't were four and seven.) Throughout the series, she's shown strength and maturity by being able to accept her loss.

One of her wisest moments was in season five, when she chose not to use her Sirenix wish to bring her back to life. She knew that would have been wrong. After all, Matlin's in paradise now — safe from danger and free from sickness. How selfish would Musa be to drag her mother out of eternal happiness?

Ho-Boe hasn't been as strong as his daughter. Out of grief, he tried to crush her dream of becoming a musician. Being around music brought back too many painful memories for him.

That episode — "The Show Must Go On" (2X15) — is one of my favorites from season two. The title's pretty clever. Musa's show at Redfountain almost went on without her. But "show" may have been a metaphor for "life" — as in "life goes on," part of what Ho-Boe needed to learn.

We know what happened. He let her perform, she ended up fighting Stormy (not important, but still part of the episode), and at the end, we saw the father and daughter smile and hug each other at Matlin's grave. The implication was he'd healed a bit more. In season five, he looked happy again.

Why not take this subplot further? Is he ready to find love again? I know he's middle-aged, but people remarry even later in life.

How would Musa react to it? Would she accept her new mom — or resent her (and him)?

We've already seen a story like this with Stella in season three. The difference is her mother, Queen Luna, is still alive, so she'd still be in her life even if King Radius remarried. But Matlin's gone forever. Would Musa take that into consideration?

(Side note: if you count the comics, her father isn't the only widower in her story. In #33: "Ghosts," she meets a composer named Sifelius, whose wife has recently died. He's given up on writing music and shut himself up in his house. I won't ruin the ending, in case you haven't read the comic.)

That's it for today!

Musings & Rants
10

We all know that the Winx are each other’s best friends, even though some are more than others. For example, I would probably say that Bloom is much closer to Stella than she is to Musa. But I sometimes wonder about the friends they had when they were younger, before the Winx Club was formed.

In season 1, I don’t think Bloom was shown to have any Earth friends besides Mitzi 😛 . Seriously speaking, though, she doesn’t seem to hang out with anyone in Gardenia besides her family and the Winx.

Aisha's friend Anne

Aisha’s friend Anne

With Aisha, if you guys remember, her childhood friend was a girl named Anne who basically taught her to love dancing. I wonder what’s she up to now? I am crossing my fingers for her to appear in future seasons. That would make one interesting episode.

With the other four girls, nothing much is known about their old friendships. I also wonder if Flora and Krystal have ever met before Krystal enrolled in Alfea.

It would be really cool for the Winx to open up more about their previous friendships in their respective home planets. I want to learn more about it, and I’m sure everyone’s feeling the same.

Yes, the original opening is great, but I’ve fallen in love with this one: the German opening. It has a more magical, mysterious feel to it—just a beautiful song. I think Heller als Licht means “brighter than light.” I may eventually post the lyrics, but for now, just listen and be enchanted. =)

Introducing Una di Noi: my new Winx Club blog. What can I say? I’m a fan. It’s not fancy yet, but I’ll decorate it when I get the chance. I plan to talk about the differences between the two English dubs (see this post on my other blog), the differences between the Italian and English version, the merchandise, the new season, etc. I hope my fellow fans will enjoy it.

For those of you who don’t know, una di noi, which means “one of us,” is a line from the Italian theme Nel Segno Di Winx (“In the Sign of Winx”). If you never heard it before, you can watch a video of it below.

Please check out my other blog, Prattler’s Paradise. There’s no theme; I just write about whatever I feel like. There’s a section of song lyrics (mostly anime), too.
