Musings & Rants

Sky. (Oops, I mean “Brandon.” 😛 ) The original Prince Charming of Winx Club.

We know more about him than about any of the other guys. He’s the leader of the Boys Club, he’s Crown Prince/King-in-Training of Eraklyon, and his life is constantly in danger due to tension in the kingdom. Brandon’s his best friend and bodyguard, Riven’s his not-so-friendly rival, and Diaspro’s his psycho ex-fiancĂ©e who’s hellbent on winning him back, even if she has to kill Bloom. (Let’s hope we don’t see her again.)

This season, we learned he has a cousin, Thoren, who he’s always thought was a jerk. Why? Once when they were looking for animal tracks in the woods when they were kids, they were ambushed by ninjas (nice continuity nod to season two). Thoren ran for his life, leaving Sky to fend for himself.

I get that Sky barely survived, but this was still a stupid grudge. They were just kids, and Thoren was scared. His flight response kicked in. That’s it. Does that make him a bad person? No. (I’ll talk more about that when I get to Thoren.)

Anyway, is there something else we don’t know about Sky? Even if there is, I don’t really care anymore. He’s just a spotlight hog now like his girlfriend. Rainbow’s so obsessed with him, he’s the only guy they put in Mystery of the Abyss. Do they really think we don’t care about the others? Read the rest of this post

Okay, question: Timmy usually drives the Owl, right? How’d he get back here so fast?

A couple months ago, I realized I don’t talk much about the Winx’s boyfriends. Yes, this show’s not about them, but many of them have been around since the first episode of season one. I miss the days when they were more involved in the Winx’s missions. (Nowadays, they’re just…there.)

For the next week or so, I’m gonna share my thoughts about each of the guys. I mean Nabu and everyone in the above picture only. They may not be the only boys who’ve influenced the Winx’s lives, but the rest are just one-shot characters.

Here’s a little appetizer to get things started. Remember the “Things You May Have Forgotten About the Winx [and Roxy]” post I wrote four years ago? (Wow.) We don’t know as much about the guys, so I couldn’t come up with a “forgotten” fact for each of them. But here are few facts I did think of. Do you remember these?

  • Brandon is Sky’s assistant: Lately, the show’s treated Brandon like nothing more than Sky’s best buddy. But his job to protect Sky with his life; that’s the true reason they’re always together. How good is he at his job? Well…let’s just say he used to be better at it. 😛
  • Helia is Saladin’s nephew: Or grandson if you’re more familiar with the 4Kids dub. By the way, I think the last time we saw Saladin was episode 5X11. Where’d he go? I hope the poor old man’s not dead!
  • Riven dated Darcy: You didn’t forget this, did you? Oh well. 😛
  • Timmy and Tecna almost broke up in season two: For a good part of the season, Tecna felt Timmy was a coward and didn’t wanna be seen with him. She was really rude to him, too. (I’ll talk more about that when I get to Timmy.)
  • Nabu was a rich man: Besides Sky, Nabu was the only guy in the Boys Club who was born into the upper class. In episode 3X09, when Aisha’s complaining about her arranged marriage to him, she says all she knows is “he’s from the richest family in Andros.”

I kinda feel sorry for the Nick era fans. They missed out on the “Brandon’s really Prince Sky” plot twist. 😛

That’s all for now. I’ll start off this series with my thoughts about Bloom’s boyfriend — er, fiancĂ©? — Prince Sky. See you later! 😛

image Rainbow uploaded the ending credits for season seven, which revealed the new English voice cast. You might be surprised who some of these folks are.

Final Thoughts

So, we have a bunch of actors from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and a few 4Kids Winx Club veterans. Interesting. I hope they do well.

One question some fans have asked is, “Where are the other Winx boyfriends?” Have they disappeared? Probably not.

This credits list is probably for one episode. If you rewatch seasons five and six, you’ll see Nickbow only listed the characters in the episodes they appeared in. So, only Sky, Brandon, and Timmy — who else could “Tim” be? — are in this episode.

Where are the others? Who knows? I doubt Rainbow’s gotten rid of them, though. Don’t worry. 🙂

What do you think of this cast?

Musings & Rants

The fro seen ’round the net

Winx Club is racist.

That’s the latest charge against the show. It stems from a scene in “Miss Magix” (1X12), where a dark-skinned girl has a meltdown over her hairdo, which looks like a normal afro. A writer for a blog about black natural hair called it “a clear-cut case of racism and ignorance” and “yet another attempt to impress upon little Black girls that their natural beauty is a ‘catastrophe.'” (Full post here.)

Good grief.

I’m not gonna try to defend this scene. It’s been done already, and the critics aren’t listening. No matter what we say, the problem’s still the same: this looks like an afro.

But I don’t agree the scene is racist. Calling it that implies the insult was intentional, and we don’t know that for sure. The blogger claims she does, but was she at Rainbow when they wrote the script? No. Neither were we.

All she knows is she’s offended. She’ll never know if this was meant to be offensive. She’s just guessing and reacting like we are. The difference is we know enough about Winx to give Rainbow the benefit of the doubt. She barely knows anything about it. (Did you see version one of her post? She really skimped on the research. Screenshots below.)

Now her readers think the whole show’s racist. Some have said they’ll never let their kids watch it. One even slammed the fans who defended it, saying they have “no concept of right and wrong.” Wow.

Those readers and that blogger don’t know what they’re missing. In reality, Winx Club is one of the least racist, most diverse, and most progressive cartoons on TV.

Merchandise News

Musa and Tecna Harmonix. The Pop Disco Collection. Any future fashions for the Stella Design Studio. These are just some of the Winx toys JAKKS Pacific never released.

Yesterday, Winx Club International Fan Club ( shared these pics of other scrapped Winx dolls:

Here are even more, courtesy of WinxClubRUS. Looks like these might be (or were planned to be) rescued by Witty Toys.

A graveyard of good intentions. *Sigh* 🙁

Let’s hope the Color Splash, Bloomix, and Mythix dolls don’t get added to this Hall of Shame. The odds don’t look good for us right now. According to Winx fan Dane V., JAKKS has pushed back the Color Splash release date to…someday. Sounds like Musa and Tecna Harmonix all over again to me. 🙁
